Team Work

 Team work

While people are busy talking about team building and working as a team in the office, it is not always easy developing an effective team. As I am the only homemaker with two young kid in the class, it is sometime quite difficult to put what I learned and to practice it at home. The only way that I can put into practice is in the class itself. Developing team building skills is an important benefit for my learning and for my self-development.

The major benefit of working in a team for me was that it facilitated learning and enhanced my understanding of the task given and the covered topic. Working as a team definitely make me learned more about the topic and also about my team member strengths and weaknesses compared if the task given was completed by myself.

We discussed each entry in depth and that helped me understand the complexity and the value of recording the transaction. We work hand in hand closely and updated each other on every details of our project just to make sure we all had the same frequency of understanding.

It is also very important to feel free to share our ideas and knowledge with each other and that definitely made my learning process more interactive, interesting and enjoyable.

Through reflection on the team process I have become aware of useful strategies to deal with issues and to gain commitment to the goals of the team. I tried to improve consciously as much as I can and learnt a number of things that can help the human race improve.

My personal equation for this project LPM : Hardwork + teamwork + passion = success, splendid memories, enjoyable moments and fun companies.

S.M.A.R.T Plan

6th Feb 2014 – LPM – Module 2: Support Team                   Mr Jamali

Second lesson Support team. Today topic covered on organizational structured – purpose, goal and objectives. It gives me a better understanding of how a company structured, the characteristic of the organisaton , it defines and limits the behaviours of members.

There is one interesting topic or should I say a point about “Conflict Tolerance”. It describes how well an organization deals with arguments and clashes; are staffs encouraged to air grievances and difference openly. Today topic also touches the SMART Plan (Specific, Measurable, Achievable/Attainable, Realistic and Time-based) I remembered my experienced working with an enterprise in tourism industry.

As an experienced staff in the front office and has a handful of foreign talent working closely with us – one thing that was a big headache to us was the conflict among the staff at the front counter –“Lateness”. We are the main ferry operator to an island thus we could not make the effort to delay our ferry or worst still to call the Master to hold the ferry, as a minute delay caused monies. I was given the task to rectify and solve this problem of staff coming late to work thus contribute to lesser check-in counter for passenger and this will then lead to delay in immigration clearance and soon affect the ferry departure time and arrival in the island itself.

I was referred by my superior to be in the Focus Group for this project. It took weeks of brainstormed and days of self-observation and monitoring. When we finally, came up with a solution - We done up two big frame slightly bigger than size of A4 paper, one which we named it “Star of the Month – I am Officially Famous” and we hang it at our counter floor and one to “Wall of Shame” we placed in our pantry area – it not our intentioned to shame any of the staff but we had to be harsh as at that point of time as this issue was among the crucial one.

Our emphasized was more to boost the morale of the staff then to shame anyone, the frames recognized and appreciates the effort made by staff who was always progressing and showed their effort at work. A small token of appreciations was given to the ‘Star of the month’ for their good progress and to top it all appointed as Ambassador in the ferry for the following month.

Initially, I was the sudden enemy of my colleagues and a lot of rumours was heard about resigning, biased and definitely unhappiness BUT the management loved it. It was put on trial for a period of times till the management decided to let the idea stay. From then on the ferry departure had improve significantly or no complain from the ferry Master being called to hold the ferry except for unforeseen circumstances of the tourist or guest themselves with the customs. This had also lead to profitability to the organization and I had also seen the increase of customer satisfaction in view of many positive feedbacks and staffs showed more initiative to exceed customer needs and wants.

The ‘S.M.A.R.T’ plan that our focus group implemented was indeed a successful one. I was told the frames are still in practice even though majority of us in the focus group was no longer with the company. I too learned a very useful lesson during class in LPM that is by understanding the issue and taking positive action, I can help solve the problem and I can transform the office a place where I  really want to be

Vision, Mission and Core Values

5th Feb 2014 – LPM – Module 2: Support Team                   Mr Jamali

First lesson Support team by Mr Jamali. Class starts with a mind map to overview the module topic we will be covering. Something that I am familiar with as I am a visual person and I do mind map to have a better understanding of what I am learning.

I was taken aback when Mr Jamali had again touched the topic about Vision, Mission and Core values. This seemed to be very important statement in an organization. Reflecting on it again, it gives me an idea that I should suggest this to my husband. As a stay at home mother with two children, I have to convert my class study into context of a home environment. I believe it will definitely help me and my family foreseen our aim in life as a family and for our future generation. And so we create our own vision and mission for our family. Due to our kids are still young our statement is simple and a meaningful one.

  • Vision: We strive to treat one another with love, kindness, understanding and respect.

  • Mission: We will work to keep our relationship strong through submission to Allah, loving, respectful and honest communication as long and as much as we can do.

We also shared the same understanding of core values of a family.
  • We will emphasize on love, respect, compassion, honesty, trust, communicating and flexibility to support one another imperfection.

This vision will stay and will be review again when the kids are much older, like what was being told in class “vision may change due to external or internal factor”. For now, this is our family vision and mission statement.

  • Reshaping our family one step at a time.
